LEGIBE Girls Empowerment and Education-Uganda, is a registered non-profit organization, aiming to empower vulnerable girls and teenage mothers in our community, on the shores of Lake Victoria, through Education and Health, to save them from sexual and labor exploitation.
Currently, we have forty (40) vulnerable girls from the community who registered under our five thematic programs listed below:
- The Girls' Education Program
- Mental Health and Counseling
- Community Outreach Program
- Music, Dance, and Drama (MDD)
- Self-sustenance Program / Sewing Project.
Ever since we started, four and half years ago, LEGIBE Girls' Empowerment and Education, has been and is still conducting its programs in a rented premise. The premise has toilets which are shared by all the tenants including our forty girls, which puts them at a risk of acquiring Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) and UTIs.
Because we have our plot of land where we plan to put up a permanent building structure to serve as our office and a room where all our program activities will always be conducted. We therefore decided to start a fundraising campaign for the construction of a pit latrine for our forty girls, a project we named "Build A Pit Latrine for 40 Girls in Rural Uganda - #76109".
Unfortunately, we have not yet started on it, because we haven't raised enough money to meet its budget as we have only raised $100.
We shall continue with our fundraising campaign for this project.
Completing the construction of this pit latrine project, will help the girls to have their own safe toilet facility which will save them from acquiring STDs and UTIs from sharing toilets with all other premise tenants.
They will also have a safe and secure place for shower as girls, especially during their menstral periods.
Gertrude, the girls' leader has this to say about what the project means to them:
" My name is Gertrude. I'm 18 years old, and I'm a high school student doing a subject combination of Geography, Economics, and Agriculture.
The construction of a pit latrine will help us girls to have privacy, and will also save us from acquiring diseases.
