The World Health Organization warns that 99% of the global population breathes air exceeding safe quality limits, posing severe health risks. Air pollution in the Middle East and North Africa causes more than 270 000 deaths annually. The region's lack of data is a significant obstacle to accurately assessing the air quality that the population breathes.
Air pollution is a silent killer, damaging our public health and economies. In the MENA region, it poses a significant health threat and it's directly linked to more than 270 000 annual fatalities and the loss of more than $141 billion to economies that are unstable and fragile. To address the critical lack of air quality data in the MENA region, Greenpeace MENA proposes the widespread deployment of air quality monitors. This will enable us to accurately assess pollution levels, identify pollution sources, and develop evidence-based policies. By equipping communities with real-time air quality information, we can empower them to demand clean air and protect public health.
Improved public health and safety of the population is our first and most critical objective. Hence, reduced air pollution will decrease respiratory and cardiovascular diseases, leading to fewer newborn premature deaths and lower healthcare costs.
