River Cleaning Project -- Summer of 2021

Even seeing the end of the tunnel with the COVID-19 pandemic situation, it is still impacting our everyday life. We hope you and your loved ones are in good spirits and health.

Given the unprecedented situation, where it has been difficult to hold in-person activities, Hands On Tokyo is striving to serve our community as best as we can. We are grateful for your continuous support to help us continue addressing the needs of our community amid the COVID-19 pandemic. With your support, we will continue to create innovative projects and provide services to help our community transition to “New-Normal” with and beyond COVID-19 crisis. None of our services would have been possible without your commitment and trust towards our organization. We are extremely grateful to have your support through this platform to innovate different types of services to meet the needs of our community.

Since our last report we have developed several Youth led virtual and other projects. We have discussions with high school and college students on a regular basis to explore innovative ideas to promote volunteerism and encourage our youth leaders to continue serving for the community during these unprecedented times.

Among many of our Youth led activities, we would like to highlight this project that was planned and executed by members of our Youth Impact Program. Considering current Covid situation, Youth Impact team came up with the idea to conduct river cleaning project. It seemed this was the best type of community service we can actually do – being outside along the river, and to be able to keep social distance between ourselves.

Below is the report of the river clean up event from one of our active Youth Impact member.

On 18th of July 2021, a River Clean-Up project was brought up by leaders of Youth Impact Group. In times of climate change and pollution, keeping our environment clean is an important contribution to fight against this condition which will bring us an immediate effect.

Prior to this River Clean-Up event, we had a chance to educate ourselves with a webinar conducted by a chairperson of river/ocean cleaning aid forum. So by the time we walked along the river, we knew that plastic pollution is one of the biggest issues regarding climate change and pollution. Most of it ends in rivers which then is brought into the ocean where it shows great danger to fish, animals, plants and all sea creatures. Almost all fish are now confirmed to contain micro-plastic in their organs so we, human are affected by the pollution as well, through consumption of fish. As plastic takes a long time to decay, it is very important to dispose and recycle it properly.

To make a contribution to stop this problem, the River Clean-up project was brought to life. Young volunteers met up at a nearby station at 10am and walked together to Tamagawa River. There were many new volunteers so we started with a short introduction of each participant. After the initial meeting to remind each other how important to keep the river clean, we split up in groups. With gloves, garbage bags and tongs, we walked along the river to collect trash that has been thrown away in the wide area. At a first glance, the river looked very clean already. However, when we got closer and to the river, you could find plastic bottles, plastic wraps and packages of snacks, umbrellas, tissues, cigarettes, masks and so many different types of waste. In the end, we had collected quite an amount that we all were surprised.” - Youth Leader

Hands On Tokyo’s Youth Impact Program guides the youth leaders to design, plan and execute their own program. This project is a great example of the process where youth leaders took all the initiatives on program planning and execution with the guidance of Hands On Tokyo’s staff. The youth members continue to learn through this process and ultimately advocate as a leader for the cause they care for, which eventually makes a difference in our society. Our youth leaders are able to complete and learn through these cycles to accomplish our mission.

All of the work we do would not be possible without the support from you, our donors. Through your generosity we will empower even more of the youth, and together continue to make a difference in our community!

Thank you for your continued support and trusting our organization to keep striving through the tough times together with our community.

We wish for everyone's safety and health.
