LMF Youth Farming 2nd Report 2023

By Mercy Egbuchulam-Onyianta | Project Leader

TO: Our LMF Team Of Heroes,

I am pleased to bring you the progress report on our Youth Farming to Eliminate Hunger project for this next quarter, June 2023. We have created a modified approach that will better suit the community’s need and demand.

Ten of Lady Mitz Foundation’s (LMF) newly trained Youth Farmers from the 2022 cohort have returned to farming and have been assigned individual small portions of LMF leased farm land for their own practical experience. They are using the techniques and strategies they have learned through our educational programs to make a mini vegetable farm, growing a vegetable of their choice. Each Youth Farmer has been paired with a volunteer to assist them. The Youth Farmers will also coach these volunteers on concepts they have learned.  These 10 volunteers are the newcomers of the 2023 cohort and all of them are routinely scheduled to receive supervision from the Master Coach, to ensure that they stay within guidelines, schedules and routines, in order to keep the momentum going.

Practice What You Have Learned

1. Conferences about what concepts have worked and what did not work to decide what should be kept and what improvements should be made

2. Portion of LMF Leased land to be divided amongst the Youth Farmers and have them choose a vegetable to grow in their land and build their farm around. A physical representation of what they have learned

3. Choose a Volunteer partner from New Volunteers (2023 Cohort)

4. Enlightenment of the Youth Farmers on the objectives and goals of the project

5. Land Clearing and Preparation

6. Training / Orientations for New Youth Volunteers

7. Procurement of farm tools.

  1. Making of beds, ridges, and mounds to protect crops from rain actions and possible flooding
  2. Planting and cultivation (after rainfall)

Next Steps:

  • Early introduction of maize will help in the improvement of soil nutrients through nitrogen fixation before the introduction of other cash crops such as pumpkins, water leaves, okra, etc.

  • Building of scarecrows in the farms to ward off birds and other pests
  • Building fences around the farms to keep out and deter intruders and stray animals.
  • Maintaining the farm (ex:  getting rid of weeds)

It is because of your support that we were able to continue our program. We are asking for your ongoing help to support our youth on how to farm, sustainably feed themselves, their families and communities in an effort to eliminate hunger. We cannot do it without your help. Your donations will provide our Youth Farmers with stipends to use for upkeep to continue maintenance of their farm throughout our project.

YOU are why Lady Mitz Foundation continues to thrive. YOU are the reason behind the smiling faces of an abundance of youths in the Umunoha community.  You didn’t just feed and train them; you have given them hope and a means of livelihood. They are now very happy and excited to go out and practice what they have learned after the rainfall. On behalf of the entire LMF Community, I give you an appreciative round of applause and a heartwarming thank you. I pray that God continues to bless each and every one of you more and more, Amen!

The youth depend on LMF and we depend on you to support our fundraising efforts. Our next fundraising campaign is GlobalGiving’s Bonus Day, on July 12, 2023. A one-day campaign to incentivize major donors with a tiered matching structure for donations $100 USD and up and a focus on major donors.

We also encourage you to consider monthly donations because besides guaranteeing available funds, year-round, new recurring donations earn a one-time 100% match after four months.  We can’t do it without your help and support. Join LMF in the race to raise funds for our project and help us get our donations matched, as well.  This campaign is designed to celebrate high-dollar donors and as well as help us move our smaller-dollar donors up to new giving heights.  The minimum donations on this campaign are $100 USD, and donations from $100 - $499 will get 15% in matching funds. Donations of $500 - $749 will get 30% in matching funds, while $749 - $1000 will get 50 %in matching funds (While funds last).

I am asking for your help to assist our youth in the following ways, please:

  • Donate on before 11:00 am on July 12, 2023 to ensure funds will be matched, as GlobalGiving will only match funds while supplies last
  • If possible, donate more than $100 to ensure donations will be matched
  • Sign up for monthly donations (GlobalGiving website minimum is $10.00)
  • Share the work of our youths and encourage a friend or two to donate.

God Bless You, Amen!

Consistent support is the key to ensure ongoing impact. Please also share this with your contacts and invite them to consider supporting this worthy project. Together we will continue to create an impact on people, one village at a time. Amen!

Once again, I thank you for your thoughtfulness, kindness and generosity.  You are part LMF’s Team of Heroes and our youth are forever grateful to you. Remain always blessed, Amen!

We will keep you informed about the progress of the project. If you have any comments, questions, or input, please feel free to direct them to us, and we will answer as best we can.
