Challenge

Throughout Colombia's five decades of internal armed conflict, there have been numerous attempts at reintegration of former combatants as well as displaced populations. As the majority of those affected by the conflict are young people between the ages of 13-25, programs which focus on a holistic development and reintegration of those affected by violence are essential to strengthen the social fabric of the surrounding community and build its resilience against conflict.

Solution

This program will train 25 at-risk young people between the ages of 13 and 18 in science, technology, and innovation in order to promote holistic personal, mental, and emotional development, while distancing them from unproductive and dangerous activities. The program focuses on leadership training, improving creativity, teamwork, and develops technical and scientific abilities in each participant through diverse classroom modules.

Long-Term Impact

The technology workshops and training of trainers, all with a focus on the holistic development and integration of each participant in his or her community will build their self-confidence, inner strength, and motivation to develop entrepreneurial ventures for the benefit of those around them. These ventures will lend greater credibility to the surrounding institutions as well as open doors for the participants to be viewed as positive agents of change in their communities.
