Learning development for children begins as toddlers however, it is important to inculcate structure early childhood development programmes to support their growth and stimulate thinking abilities.

Our Youth Development Training Programme students in Government College Jalingo came together for their community development exercise as indicated in the programme and identified the impact of early childhood development at home through school education. They found that little children in Moyo-Gwoi Primary School in Taraba State, northern Nigeria would do better academically if they had a reading facility within the school given that it the children are largely from low-income families who cannot afford yearly textbooks for their kids.

To create a library, the YDTP students needed to rebuild a broken down classroom that would become the library. They worked collectively as a team seeking out funding, building materials and book items to donate to the school within the local government. Together they raised cash to pay for the renovation and build table and chairs.

To sustain and optimize use of this library, a teacher would stand in as a temporary librarian and the primary board would continue to provide books for the kids and make it even more conducive for reading.

300 children are benefiting from this project and LEAP is proud of this intervention on education as it is the first library commissioned in a public primary school within the state. Our to the students initiative, parents have less burden to buy textbooks to support learning for their kids. This task was bravely undertaken by young adults themselves shortly after participating in the programme. They leveraged partnership with a local NGO and creatively solved a problem in their community.
