The Youth Day of Service (YDoS) is a pan-African initiative led by LEAP Africa that channels the passion, creativity, and agency of young people into meaningful community action in commemoration of International Youth Day. At the last cohort, the programme continued its strong tradition of moving beyond celebration to tangible impact, with 70 SDG action projects implemented by YDoS Project Leads, In-Country Partners, and Regional Partners across 11 African countries. Collectively, these initiatives reached and impacted 73,826 beneficiaries, addressing critical development priorities such as poverty reduction, access to quality education, climate action, gender equality, and inclusive economic growth. The scale and spread of implementation reflect the growing momentum of youth-led development efforts across the continent.
The programme recorded participation from marginalised groups, including 1.3% persons with disabilities and 0.5% internally displaced persons. A key outcome of the programme was the significant increase in participants’ understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals within the African context. Approximately 78% of participants reported a clearer grasp of how the SDGs relate to local challenges, including poverty alleviation, improved education access, climate resilience, and gender equity. In addition, the programme strengthened leadership capacity at both personal and community levels. Beyond awareness and leadership growth, the programme reinforced the importance of ethical leadership and technical competence in driving sustainable impact.
About 77% of participants reported improvements in self-leadership skills such as goal-setting, time management, and confident decision-making, while 74% noted enhanced transformative leadership capacity, enabling them to mobilize others, lead change initiatives, and address pressing community issues effectively. Approximately 75% of participants reported strengthened ethical standards and conduct, highlighting a deeper commitment to transparency, accountability, and fairness in their work. Together, these outcomes position young African leaders not only as advocates of the SDGs, but as equipped and values-driven actors capable of designing and delivering impactful solutions across the continent.
Thank you for standing with us as we champion youth leadership, inclusive development, and transformative impact across Africa.
