Youth and women are a majority of the population but underrepresented in elections and democratic governance that dampen development outcomes despite resilient government and NGO sector efforts in Cameroon. This context calls for more mutual support for 2000 vulnerable youth and women in each of the 10 regions of Cameroon to participate in elections and therefore, advance inclusive democratic practices that will also deliver greater development outcomes which the current project will assist.
The problem is that after an analysis of official records as well as follow up interview and focus group data, the Youth and women makeup a majority of the population of Cameroon but are underrepresented in elections which decide government executives and this in turn undermine democracy, peace and development outcomes achieved despite relentless government and NGO sector efforts to redress the situation. This inequality will persist after 2025 when Cameroon is expected hold three elections.
To solve the problem, this project will encourage government, CSO, traditional, vulnerable group stakeholders to promote vulnerable youth and women inclusion in elections in 2025 when Cameroon will hold municipal council, parliamentary and presidential elections. The project will strengthen democratic civil, leleadership and competitive political processes, freedoms of expression, peaceful assembly milieus through sensitization, training, issuing civil status documents, advocacy campaigns.
The expected long term impact after improved participation of the vulnerable youth and women in elections in 2025 is greater representation of the vulnerable masses and advocacy and policy frameworks for mass involvement of the vulnerable mass groups in governance processes that drive development to deliver inclusive sustainable outcomes in Cameroon.
