Youth and Elections Project is aimed at supporting young voters through the use of text messaging that will increase voter turnout and serve as a reminder to voters on Election Day. It will further encourage and support citizens to participate in the 2017 general and Presidential the elections. Eg. # of days to elections, # of voting precincts. Targeted at helping young voters through the use of text messaging and as a reminder to vote and increase voters turnout on Election Day.
The total numbers of registrants for the 2017 general and presidential elections in Liberia is 2,183, 683, amongst which young people make up the biggest percentage of our voting population approximately 70% of the population. (Ages- 18-35) But over the years they have not been able to utilize that portion so very well. The project is a practical and direct response to addressing some of the critical issues confronting young people demography in our electoral process.
The project will send out reminder text messages between 400-500 text and voice messages per week nationwide. Disseminating information and updates about the 2017 electoral process, the holding of violent free and fair elections, urging candidates and political parties' leaders to accept the results. Eligible and first-time voters will receive text messages as a reminder to vote on Election Day; messages will be simplified and easy to read.
Subsequently, young voters will be able to utilize the demography dividends by fully participating and making better choices in electing leaders that will be responsive and sensitive to their needs. Additionally, massive youth turnout during the general and presidential elections, thereby producing the best alternatives options for our emerging democracy.
