In 2013, Amina attended a Career Day workshop by Shelmina Abji-Babai, the former VP for the Global Microsoft Alliance at IBM. Shelmina’s presentation opened Amina’s eyes. Like Amina, Shelmina grew up in East Africa. She moved to the United States, went to college, and achieved incredible success in the tech world.
Amina realized that if Shelmina could soar, so could she. “When I arrived from Kenya at just 15, I didn’t have a dream for myself,” she said. “Y-WE helped me see that college is a possibility for me and gave me the support to realize that dream.”
Because of the connection they established at Career Day, Amina interned at IBM. She set her sights high, and won a full scholarship to Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma. She will graduate this spring with her degree in Business Management.
At Career Day, join an intergenerational, mulicultural community to explire career opportunities, stories, and inspiration. Over 20 diverse professional women workshop leaders will share their authentic stories of career challenges and success. Career fields covered will range from: medicine, arts, law, fashion, dance, media, government, non-profit, education, entrepreneurship, business, and beyond.
Career Day takes place April 16, 2016 from 10:30 to 5:00 at Mobius Hall, UW Bothell/Cascadia College.
