This time of year, we hear a lot of messages about shopping, buying, and consuming. I don’t know about you, but I feel like I get caught up in a holiday frenzy, only to look back and wonder what it was all for.
Fortunately, the young women of Y-WE get me back on track. Sophie, a Y-WE participant, reminded me that this season isn’t all about buying and getting. It's about honoring the people you love.
“We should honor the ones we love because we never know when they are going to come in, or go out of our lives,” she said. “When someone gives you unconditional love it also comes with support and care for you. We should give it back because it makes the world a better place.”
Sophie attended Y-WE Write, our creative writing summer camp. She wrote a song for her mom, and performed it on the last night.
“I decided to honor my mom because she has always been there for me. And when I felt like no one cared or loved me she proved to me that she did.”
Y-WE Write helped Sophie explore her natural creativity and develop her voice as a songwriter. But that isn’t her favorite thing about Y-WE. “My favorite thing about Y-WE is the community of fully supportive, loving women that want you to do your best every day.”
Your gift will make a difference. “If I wasn't in Y-WE I probably would have a lot more confidence issues and I wouldn't really know how to interact with people who are different than me,” Sophie explains. “Because of Y-WE I am exactly opposite, I am confident in who I am, and in my future. I also have lots of experience with interacting with people from different cultures, races, and parts of the world. Because of this I have made so many more friends that I wouldn't have met if I wasn't in Y-WE.”
In 2016 Y-WE will embark on a bold new chapter as an independent non-profit organization. We will pilot a new co-leadership model, embedding our values and our leadership structure. Most importantly, we will serve our biggest ever Y-WE Lead group.
You can ensure we start the year off strong. Invest in the power and potential of young women today.
