Career Exploration (CE) – YTD FY15 (ending June 30, 2015)
Through Youth Enrichment Services’ (YES) Career Exploration program (CE), teens from Boston’s under-resourced neighborhoods receive personalized attention and group experiential learning opportunities that inspire and prepare them to succeed in today’s workforce. Youth participate in 12 weekly skill-building and educational workshops where they learn and practice critical technical competencies (e.g. computer skills, resume/cover letter writing, and online job search tools) and job readiness skills (e.g. time management, goal setting, public speaking, problem-solving, and interviewing). In addition, the Career Exploration program at YES offers:
Corporate Visits, Job Shadows & Career Panels. This year, teens have had exciting opportunities to learn first-hand about a wide variety of potential careers, thanks to partnerships with Bank of America, Citi, HNTB Corporation, Liberty Mutual, FUEL Education, BNY Mellon, Sherwin-Williams, InterContinental Hotels & Resorts, City Year, and others.
CE Internship. A six-week job training opportunity is being extended to 6 youth (an expansion from one slot last year), who will take ownership of a meaningful project under the mentorship of YES staff, building their skills, confidence and resumes.
YES also partners with the Boston Public Schools. CE is being offered for a second year at Dorchester’s Jeremiah E. Burke High School and, for the first time, at Charlestown High, which serves YES’s target population: 97% of students are minorities and 80% are eligible for free or reduced lunch.
Career Exploration delivers impactful, demonstrated outcomes. Last year, 100% of students increased their technical and job-readiness skills, put more effort into their school work, advanced to the next grade level on time, and 100% of seniors graduated and advanced to college.
Generous support from people like you are a major reason for the Career Exploration's continued success and tremendous growth. By June 2015, five times as many young people will have completed the CE program per year as compared to June 2012. From all of us at YES, thank you for your support and investing in Boston teens!
YES Academy: The high-impact YES Academy programs create pathways to leadership for Boston underserved teens by engaging them physically, mentally and socially through athletics, service learning, weekly workshops, and peer helping. These high interaction programs require a year-long or seasonal commitment from youth and include Career Exploration, College Preparation, Girls Outdoor Adventure Leaders (GOAL), and Junior Volunteer Leaders. YES Academy youth have been demonstrated to increase the skills and confidence they need to succeed in school, work, and life.
YES Academy Youth: To date in FY15, 173 teens have been engaged to date: 65 Junior Volunteer Leaders, 42 in College Preparation, 23 in GOAL and 43 in Career Exploration.
