Fun and Safety in the Midst of Chaos

By Natasha Baker | Development Volunteer

Music Time!
Music Time!

Hello supporters! What a crazy time in the world right now. Fortunately, your donations are helping to create a safe and stable space for kids and their families, bucking the trend of global chaos.

Some highlights from the past few months:

  • As in the US, Mother’s Day is celebrated in May in Brazil. We spent the month of May focused on mothers and women, honoring their role in loving and caring for others. The theme of the month was: Caring is an Act of Love – Who Cares for Others Plants Love in the World. One of the activities we offered as part of this theme was professional development classes in how to do manicures & pedicures as well as eyebrow design to the mothers of the kids in Yes to Life. With these professional skills, the mothers will be in a better position to find paid work and be able to continue supporting their families.
  • We offered music classes to the kids, using instruments loaned to Yes to Life, including the cavaquinho (a Brazilian-style guitar), drums, and the ukelele.
  • We have a monthly partnership with Circus School (Circo Escola) where the kids get to do all kinds of games, tricks, and crafts inspired by the circus.
  • June was a huge month, with the annual festival celebrating St. John, St. Anthony, and St. Peter (festa São João) where we eat traditional foods and celebrate rural life.
  • July is winter break in Brazil, where classes pause, but Yes to Life does not! We kept everything going to support our kids during this break and keep them active with fun and educational activities.

With your continued support, we want to do more, including:

  • Build a space where we can offer individualized therapy to program participants. Yes to Life is located in the Marrocos neighborhood, where violence and poverty are the norm. The children who come to us, therefore, come with a great need for psychological support along with others forms of support. Right now, we do not have a private space where we can offer the kind of one-on-one attention this aspect of child well-being requires. Will you help us raise funds to build this space?
  • Maintain and improve the quality of the food we serve. Sufficient and healthy nutrition for the kids is also vital to their well-being, but limited resources make this goal an ongoing challenge.

Thanks again for your support. Wishing you peace wherever you are.

Muito obrigada,

Natasha (Development Volunteer)
