Hello supporters! We hope the middle of the year is treating you well (it is somehow almost July!).
Our kids in the Yes to Life program have been busy and we're excited to share what they have been up to.
Now, February is known globally as the time of carnaval, but did you know that in Brazil, it is also called the Month of the Leaf because of carnaval?
The kids got in on the fun, making masks and abadás (tops) for their very own Bloquinho Sim a Vida. We had face painting, clowns, and music to have an amazing (and safe and age-appropriate) carnaval experience for the kids. We even came up with our own song for it:
Portuguese
“Carnaval da Vida”
É Carnaval, vem brincar,
No Sim à Vida eu vou ficar!
Tem sorriso, tem cuidado,
Todo mundo é respeitado!
Cada um do seu jeitinho,
Todo mundo tem valor,
Aqui a gente aprende junto,
Com amizade e amor!
Refrão:
Ô abre a roda, vem dançar,
A alegria vai passar!
Sim à Vida é nossa voz,
Canta alto, chama nós!
Tem diferença, tem união,
Tem escuta, tem mão na mão,
No batuque do coração,
Celebramos a inclusão!
English
The Carnival of Life
It's carnival, come play
At Yes to Life is where I'll stay!
There are smiles and care
Everyone is respected!
Each in their own way
everyone has value
here we learn together
with friendship and love!
Chorus:
Open up the circle, come dance
Happiness is going to come through
Yes to Life is our voice
Sing loudly, call us!
There are differences, there is unity
There is listening, there is hand-holding
in the drumming of the heart,
we celebrate inclusion!
The fun didn't stop in February. In March, we did several cultural outings with the kids, including to see the Circus School (Circo Escola) in honor of Circus Day. We stayed busy with arts and crafts as well, doing paper mache, making cards, and learning music.
April was a milestone month - we celebrated 30 years of the Mental Health Movement! We involved the kids in lots of celebratory events, including events to celebrate indigenous traditions (the kids got a visit from the Pajé, or local indigenous leader - that was definitely a highlight!). We have come a long way and we are so grateful for your support in getting us here. Here is to another 30 years!
