Youth4Literacy (Y4L) plans for 2023

By Sharleen Haupt | Creating a Culture of Reading Manager

Youth reading a story to children
Youth reading a story to children

The Youth4Literacy (Y4L) objective is to place reading assistants in each Grade 2 and Grade 3 classroom in schools in the Western Cape. Each classroom receives a box of storybooks and readers and each child in the class receives two or three paired reading sessions a week and has at least two stories read to the class each week. In addition, each child is encouraged to read at home through the promotion of our data-free Storytime with Shine Mobi-Site and the provision of a quarterly @Home pack which includes stationery, a Bookdash storybook, and a children’s magazine, called The Little Issue.

Creating a Culture of Reading

The Y4L Programme is part of Shine Literacy's overarching Creating a Culture of Reading (CCR) Strategy. The CCR framework calls upon and equips parents, caregivers, and the greater community to work together to Creating a Culture of Reading in the spaces where children live, play and learn. CCR is divided into three distinct spheres of influence:  schools, homes, government, and other partnerships.

Y4L is the centerpiece of CCR@School and Shine Literacy has used our learnings from 2022 to reimagine Y4L 2023.  The theme is to expand our reach and impact by leveraging our partnerships.  From 2023, Y4L will focus on the PYEI youth already in schools as Teaching Assistants (TAs), eliminating the stipend funding issue.

Shine Literacy will offer Reading Partner training to the TAs from Grades 1- 4 at schools in the Western Cape. In addition, the TAs will receive between three and six top-up training and support visits from us throughout the year to ensure quality programme delivery.  Monitoring & Evaluation will include quantitative data through the tracking of paired reading sessions as well as the analysis of Systemic and Early Grade Reading Assessment (EGRA) results.  Qualitative data will come from surveys, focus groups, and interviews with TAs, educators, beneficiaries, and parents/caregivers.

Educators from these schools will also have access to two Community of Practice events that aim to encourage, support and equip educators to make the most of the Y4L TA Reading Partners and improve literacy outcomes in their classrooms.

Y4L 2023 reimagined allows us to expand our reach and impact by using existing partnerships and programmes.   Going forward our partners and schools will manage the day-to-day youth supervision while Shine steps in at strategic intervals to provide support and additional training.

Shine@Home packs were birthed in 2020 when access to learners was severely limited due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. From 2020 through 2022 Shine has provided 134,282 @Home Packs to learners in Gr1,2 and 3 at our beneficiary schools across the country.

From 2023 Shine will only provide @Home packs for our existing Chapter schools which include quarterly TIME (Together in My Education) for all Grade 1 learners and Shine Packs for all Grade 2 and 3 learners.

We look forward to sharing more updates on our progress during the course of the year. Thank you for supporting our vision of Creating a Nation of Readers in our local communities.
