The latest news for our World Vision Nepal colleagues, as of May 4th

  • The government has reported 7,365 deaths, 14,355 people are injured, 191,058 houses are reported as fully destroyed and 175,162 partially destroyed – this figure is expected to increase as more info becomes available (MOHA).
  • The total population of the affected 39 districts is 8.1 million people, and over 2 million people live in the 12 severely affected districts (reliefweb).
  • At least 940,000 children are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, and those left homeless by the earthquake are particularly vulnerable (Unicef).
  • It is estimated that 2.8 million Nepalese are displaced; more than 3.5 million people are estimated to be in need of food assistance.
  • For the majority of international agencies assessments are still underway. All agencies are currently facing similar logistical challenges, with the airport and roads being very congested.
  • Re-routed commercial and charter flights carrying relief items and responders continue to challenge humanitarian operations. A staging area was established at the Kathmandu Airport. The Humanitarian Staging Area (HAS), which connects directly to the apron of the airport, is fully operational and four Mobile Storage Units have been set up.
  • Roads in the Kathmandu Valley areas are reported to be accessible, most of the highway and link roads are open. Araniko highway connecting to Kathmandu-China border is still closed due to landslides. Satellite equipment arrived in Kathmandu to support the operation.
  • National and international rescue and relief efforts have expanded to all 12 severely affected districts. 4 people have been rescued alive in Sindhupalchwok and Nuwakot.
  • World Vision has been able to reach 12,695 beneficiaries with relief supplies, but the transport and logistics of relief supplies are a major challenge
  • World Vision has distributed 1,719 tarps, 600 blankets, and food items for 100 families.
  • World Vision has established 8 Child-Friendly Spaces (A ‘child friendly space’is an area where children and youth can come from home and meet other children, learn some age appropriate competencies that help them deal with the risks they face, be involved in expressive and some educational activities and relax in a safe place, which is focused on them. It is both a protective environment and one that enables children’s healthy development. CFSs give children the sense of safety, structure, and continuity that provide support amidst overwhelming experiences).
  • We anticipate a one year response, with 3-6 months for the initial relief phase.
