Report on the 2024 World Table Tennis for Health Festival
Event Overview
The 2024 World Table Tennis for Health Festival, held from October 23-27 in Maizières-lès-Metz, France, concluded with a resounding celebration of camaraderie, joy, and mutual support. This year marked the largest gathering in the Festival’s history, with a record-breaking 156 participants from 25 countries and territories. Over five days, players, caregivers, coaches, and spectators connected through their shared passion for table tennis, forging friendships and creating inspiring memories.
While the event experienced operational challenges due to the introduction of a new competition format, the enthusiastic support from participants reaffirmed our mission. Looking ahead, we plan to enhance our collaboration with the Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s communities to deliver an even more impactful event in Helsingborg, Sweden, in 2025.
Championships Highlights
The Festival featured two flagship competitions: the World Parkinson’s Table Tennis Championships and the World Alzheimer’s Table Tennis Championships. The Parkinson’s Championships included Men’s and Women’s Doubles and Singles, as well as Mixed Doubles in three class levels. The Alzheimer’s Championships hosted Men’s and Women’s Singles.
Participants ranged from seasoned competitors to newcomers, with Luxembourg, Norway, and Jersey making their debut appearances. The spirit of sportsmanship, resilience, and determination was evident at every table, but the most cherished moments stemmed from the shared joy of playing and the connections formed.
World Table Tennis for Health Congress
A key component of the Festival was the two-day World Table Tennis for Health Congress, which brought together experts to share innovative approaches and insights on neurodegenerative diseases. Esteemed speakers from organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO) and UNESCO presented cutting-edge research and practical strategies for using table tennis to enhance wellness and combat Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
The Congress also saw the launch of the comprehensive NeuroPong™ Handbook, a collaboration between the ITTF Foundation and Table Tennis Connections. This resource offers scientific knowledge and practical instructions to use table tennis as a tool for managing Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s, and Dementia. (Click here to access the handbook)
Innovative Activities
As a precursor to the inaugural World Esports Table Tennis Championships in November, a lively VR table tennis activity energized the players' lounge at the Festival. Open to all skill levels and ages, the activity allowed participants to experience the thrill of table tennis in a virtual setting, bringing together players, caregivers, and fans.
Closing Ceremony
The heartwarming award and closing ceremony embodied the unity and joy that define the Festival. As medallists and participants celebrated together, the event concluded on a note of shared happiness. The ceremonial passing of the ITTF Foundation flag from the French Local Organising Committee to representatives of the Swedish Table Tennis Association marked Sweden as the next host for the 2025 Festival.
