The Special Olympics World Games are the world's largest inclusive sports event. Thousands of athletes with intellectual disabilities compete together in 26 sports. Nine days of exciting and inspiring competitions, by athletes and for athletes. From 17 to 25 June 2023, the Special Olympics World Games will take place in Berlin - the first time that Germany will host the Games! We are looking forward to a colorful international festival of sports.
Pioneering spirit for more inclusion In 1968, one thousand athletes from the USA and Canada marched into the stadium with flags and banners at the first Special Olympics World Games. The founder of Special Olympics, Eunice Kennedy Shriver spent her life campaigning for more rights and acceptance for people with intellectual disabilities. Today, Special Olympics is the world's largest sports movement for people with intellectual disabilities, with more than 5 million athletes in 174 countries.
What is our goal? In the course of the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, we want to empower and actively involve as many young people with and without disabilities as possible. We provide the cause and ideas - you implement them! Spread the ideals of inclusion with and through sports. You can get involved in our project days before, during, and after the events in 2022 and 2023.
As part of the Special Olympics World Games Berlin 2023, there will be a lot going on next to our sports competitions. Sports and culture evoke emotions, bring people together and are to be used to achieve the Games' overarching goal: to raise awareness about inclusion.
