Over the past few months, our women's group has been reading The Way of the Shepherd. A book on leadership written by Kevin Leman and Bill Pentak. The book's format is a conversation between professor and student but about the professor's flock of prize sheep. The book talks about leadership based on the way good shepherds keep their flocks. The book goes through seven ideas about forming a good team, making the workplace safe, knowing your team, guiding the team, and correcting the team. The women talked about the application of these ideas in their workplaces but also with family and friends.
One point that stood out early in the group time was choosing a good team and what happens if there is a toxic team member. The student asked the shepherd what he did when he had a sheep that was a bad influence over the others. The professor replied, "lambchops". In Spanish the word is chuletas. The women were surprised at the response, there was no doing something to rehabilitate the bad sheep, get rid of it. They applied these ideas to toxic relationships in their lives. How could they just cut off toxic friends, family members, and partners instead of all the effort to reform that person. Their conclusion was to tell the person what you need and let them go if they can not change. As they said, easy to say but not easy to do. But the group had a good conversation about letting toxic people go.
The group finished the book and next week we will start a new group. Without the support of donors like you, we can not run these programs for our women. Some of our women are in a place where they can purchase their own books, but we sponsor some members who would drop out if they had to pay for their own books. They are only about 10 to 20 USD but for many here, that is a day's wage. So thank you for your support of our programs. We hope you can continue to support these women as they become leaders in their families, neighborhoods, and communities.
