Women Building Income, Health, and Confidence

This quarter, Women Who Lead kept doing what it does best: turning practical skills into steady income and stronger households. Through our Community Health and Empowerment Clubs (CHECs), women continue to pair financial know-how (table banking, savings discipline, small loans) with health practices (hygiene, nutrition, safe water). The result is visible—kitchen gardens feeding families, small livestock projects growing, and women stepping forward as leaders in their villages.

Below are three snapshots from the field that show what donors like you make possible.

Nyamecheo: Women’s Vegetable Plots → Cash in Hand

What changed: A women’s group in Nyamecheo pooled savings to lease land and plant vegetables (black nightshade, cowpeas, spider plant). With staggered planting, they’re harvesting and selling weekly to local markets and neighbors.
Why it matters: Predictable harvests = predictable income. Members are paying school fees on time and reinvesting in seeds and soil improvement.
What’s next: Expanding the plot by one additional row per member and testing simple drip lines to manage dry spells.

Alice (Kimuka): From “Small Side Hustle” to Steady Poultry Income—Plus Health Wins

Then: Alice’s chicken project started small, fueled by merry-go-round savings.
Now: With CHEC training, she’s reinvesting profits in feed and better pens, and tracking sales weekly. The bonus? She’s also adopted key health practices—consistent handwashing, safer food prep, and a more diverse diet.
Impact at home: More eggs on the table, extra birds sold each month, and noticeable gains in household hygiene and nutrition.

Leah (Kimuka): Kitchen Garden → Daily Sales → Weekly Savings

Then: Leah wanted a reliable, low-cost enterprise she could run from home.
Now: She sells fresh sukuma, tomatoes, and onions from her kitchen garden—cash sales every market day. She keeps simple records and deposits a portion into the group’s table bank each week.
The ripple: With savings accumulating, Leah plans to add a second bed for high-demand greens and trial a nursery for seedlings to sell to neighbors.

By the Numbers (this quarter)

  • Women actively engaged: 500+ across 19 villages (and growing)
  • Enterprises featured this quarter: vegetable sales, poultry, seedlings
  • Core practices reinforced: table banking, simple record-keeping, hygiene & nutrition basics
  • Loan performance: Groups continue to meet terms on time—discipline that builds trust and momentum

What Your Gift Made Possible

  • Seed capital + training → sales: Grants and small loans let groups test ideas quickly (vegetables and poultry were this quarter’s winners).
  • Health + income, together: Soap-making, hygiene, and nutrition practices keep families healthier—so more time and energy go into businesses.
  • Leadership in motion: Women chairing meetings, tracking loans, and mentoring newer members.

What’s Next

  • Micro-expansions: One new bed per kitchen garden; a second poultry cycle for Alice and peers.
  • Better water use: Piloting simple drip lines and mulching to handle dry spells.
  • Market links: Coordinating pickup days so groups can sell in bulk and negotiate better prices.

Thank You

Every vegetable sold, every egg collected, every shilling saved—your support sits behind it. Women are leading in their homes and across their villages, modeling what sustainable, locally led change looks like. Thank you for walking with them.
