Project Update
Our Women Who Lead project continues to make a lasting impact, empowering women in rural Kenya with financial independence and economic opportunities. Through the Community Health and Empowerment Clubs (CHECs), women are gaining the skills, resources, and confidence to start and grow their businesses, improving not only their own lives but also their families and communities.
This quarter, we are excited to share the inspiring journeys of three remarkable women who have embraced entrepreneurship and transformed their futures.
Brenda Kemunto: From Small Investment to Big Impact
Brenda Kemunto, a 27-year-old entrepreneur from Nyamagesa Village, took her first step toward financial independence with just Ksh 500 ($4) through a merry-go-round savings initiative. She invested in second-hand clothing, selling items for a profit within her village. As her business grew, she expanded her market, now reaching customers at Moturumesi Market as well.
At each weekly CHEC meeting, Brenda brings her clothing inventory, offering affordable options to fellow members. As a wife and mother of two, her earnings have become crucial in supporting her family—covering school fees, putting food on the table, and assisting her carpenter husband. Thanks to her dedication, Brenda now confidently provides for her family and is a role model for other women in her community.
Milka Dan: A Greener Future in Kanyipir
Kanyipir, known for its dry climate, might seem like an unlikely place for a tree nursery—until Milka Dan proved otherwise. A 35-year-old member of the Kanyipir CHEC and Tailoring Group, Milka initially received seed capital from GHC to support her tailoring business. With her group, she made and sold dresses, setting aside a portion of their profits for savings.
From these savings, Milka launched a tree nursery, recognizing the environmental and economic benefits of planting trees despite the region’s water scarcity. Relying on a seasonal dam and sometimes walking miles to fetch water, she successfully nurtured and sold tree seedlings for Ksh 10 each (about 1 cent). Her determination has significantly improved her family’s standard of living, helping her pay school fees and provide food for her seven children.
Milka credits GHC’s economic empowerment program for opening doors she never imagined possible, showing that resilience and creativity can drive change even in challenging environments.
Agnes Moraa: Building Financial Stability, One Sale at a Time
For Agnes Moraa, a 35-year-old mother of three in Nyamagesa, joining the CHEC meant the beginning of financial stability and independence. With her first merry-go-round contribution of Ksh 750 ($6), she launched a small business selling household essentials like matches, sugar, salt, washing powder, and rice.
Over the past year, her business has flourished, allowing her to save Ksh 5,000 ($39)—enough to cover her children’s school fees in January. Beyond financial gains, Agnes has strengthened her relationship with her husband, who now takes pride in her accomplishments. Once solely dependent on his income, they now work as a team, ensuring a better future for their family.
Looking Ahead
These stories are just a glimpse of the transformative impact of the Women Who Lead project. With each passing month, more women are embracing financial independence, reinvesting in their businesses, and uplifting their families and communities.
With your support, we continue to expand these opportunities, ensuring that more women in rural Kenya have the tools and training they need to thrive.
