Summary

Mangrove forests are disappearing at an alarming rate with a shocking 35% of global mangroves having been destroyed in the last 50 years, yet in Kenya this is at 50%! This loss is catastrophic for future generations as these invaluable ecosystems provide food, shelter, protection and much more. But there is hope! Help by supporting an all women's group, the Munje Tunusuru Women's Conservation Group, by donating towards their efforts in the restoration and protection of a mangrove forest!

Challenge

Mangroves are vital fish spawning sites, they protect people and wildlife from extreme weather, reduce erosion and more. Once mangroves are removed, this leaves coastal communities vulnerable. Fisherman no longer have enough to fish to survive, communities are exposed to extreme weather conditions and the situation only worsens as people further degrade these vital forests to make a living. The Munje women need our support so they can continue planting and protecting 700ha of mangrove forest!

Solution

The women in Munje have already taken action and are actively replanting and protecting these forests, but they do not have the business knowledge and finances to sustain these activities. However, with a little support, they will be able to flourish. Through financial aid, these women will be able to continue their efforts in mangrove conservation, receive further training so they can upscale their work, and implement even more alternative livelihood opportunities for their community.

Long-Term Impact

The Women's Conservation Group efforts will increase the environmental, social, and economic stability of the 10,000 community members neighbouring the forest. We aim to support the planting of at least 5,000 mangrove trees. Funding will also support both their daily restoration activities and provide valuable business training to upscale their project. The only way to ensure mangrove protection is working with the communities that are most vulnerable to their demise!
