This project will fund the restoration of one hectare (2.5 acres) of mangrove forest that has been destroyed. The project will generate green jobs by hiring local women to carry out ecosystem restoration activities including maintaining nurseries, digging canals, and implementing various planting techniques. Mangroves are very important for the fixation of CO2. These actions will improve the biological diversity of this site, generating better conditions and improved use of the resources.
Environmental pollution and land use change through slash and burn agriculture in the buffer zones of the mangrove forest causes them to be degraded and destroyed. Many communities depend on healthy mangrove forests for their livelihoods that include tourism, fishing, and crabbing, and these activities suffer from a degraded ecosystem. Additionally, women in El Salvador face stark gender inequality in society and are under-represented in conservation initiatives.
Carrying out restoration work in a forest ecosystem improves life for all species, including humans that depend on the environment. Restoration techniques will be applied based on tested techniques that have proved successful in this region. As a women-led conservation organization, AMBAS will hire and train local women to conduct the restoration activities, increasing women's participation in conservation and improving their economic conditions.
One hectare of mangrove forest that has been destroyed will be restored. This will improve the ecosystem and promote wildlife recovery. A restored mangrove ecosystem will support the sustainable use of natural resources and will improve local livelihoods. This project also generates green jobs that not only improve household income in the community, but also empower local women. Promote women's leadership and development will increase their standing in the community and lead to greater equality.
