NGO Ba Futuru, in partnership with the local organization- Organizasaun Haburas Moris (OHM), are undertaking the 3-year  Women Driving Peace and Economic Development Project.

Between April and August of 2018, the project team has undertaken several training workshops with women’s groups in Bobonaro municipality covering Economic Empowerment and Conflict Management. At the same time Ba Futuru has been working to support the organizational development of our remote partner OHM in Bobonaro. The project team also provided ongoing support to the OHM director and staff including preparing donor applications, finance system enhancement and organizational development.

Women who attend the econmic empowerment trainings come from a disatvataged background and often have not had the opportunity for much schooling. They live in a remote area in a country that is one of the poorest in Asia.

Training participant quotations:

“A 39 years old female representative of the Susar Group in Bobonaro, stated that she was really happy to attend this training because it helped her to become a strong woman and a strong mother as well. She was more able to make decisions in her family and in her cooperative group. It increased her knowledge on how to manage a business by identifying the local resources that she has and it helped her to better manage resources in order to make money and better assist her family.  Also, it showed her how to save money for the future."

“We have had group for 4 years. In the past, our group was supported by NGOs. They provided seeds for us and we learned how to cultivate the crop instead of just eating it ourselves. But this training is good for us because we have learned about how to utilize the harvest and the excess crops by selling it to the market to make money and also how to save more money for our future. The lessons are very important for the women in our village, I would be glad to share all the lessons that I have learned from the training to my family and others in my community. My recommendation is for Ba Futuru to please come again and provide the same training to the other communities in rural areas”.

The project is funded primarily by Misereor, but as per the requirement of the donor, it still requires additional co-funding support. Thus, please share this report with friends and colleagues to encourage them to also donate to support this life changing initiative.
