Project Progress Report on Awash Women and Children Health Support Project

As AISDA was a winner of the Stars Foundation's 2012 health impact award to Charity organizations in Africa- Middle East, the GlobalGiving has approved the AISDA's proposed project on Awash Women and Children Health Support to be implemented  in Awash district of Afar regional state through creating awareness and providing different capacity building trainings to Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs), Health Extension Workers (HEWs ) & other community action groups and task forces, establishing referral systems for TBAs, establishing fistula referral system for victimized women, supporting women associations, supporting outreach vaccination to new born children, and enhancing the capacity of rural health posts. The project was approved on October 1, 2013 and Global Giving raised a fund for it.  In addition to the money raised on Global Giving, the Star Foundation has secured £28,416.73 from external donors including CAF, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Pears Foundation.

Consequently preliminary activities are carried out by AISDA at grass root level. A health officer to coordinate the AWCHSP is recruited, and to collect and compile basic and pertinent information that can be of useful for project activity implementation, a rapid assessment was conducted at Awash district. The assessment includes identifying women of birth attendants, major CBOs and health institutions existed in each sub districts, the existing health and health extension workers and their gaps too.
