2nd Quarter Climate Change Action Plan

By David Bancroft | Executive Director

I want to thank you for your support of IAIA’s Wise Climate Change Action Using Impact Assessment, and to provide a progress report on the impact of your gift.  Your generosity enabled IAIA to make gains in implementing its Climate Change Action Plan. Let's save the Polar Bears!

In advancing the climate change agenda through COP and UNFCCC, IAIA has:

  • made a presentation on the Board’s Climate Change Position Statement and Action Plan at IAIA South Africa Virtual Symposium (21-23 October 2020); and
  • initiated discussions with the United Nation’s representative on Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) to build a partnership to establish SEA guidelines for renewable energy applications.

In developing collaborations with other public influencers, IAIA has:

  • established our leadership team to reach out to the financial community;
  • identified the legal institutions with which we need a stronger dialog and recruited the leadership to accomplish this challenge;
  • developed an international press list which has 110 contacts in the US and Canada, 25 in Australia, 10 in the Philippines, 15 in China and South Korea, 10 in India, 24 in South Africa, 9 in Russia, 8 in Denmark, 33 in UK and Spain, 10 in Nigeria, 26 in countries across South America. and
  • appointed a team to engage urban planners, and developed work plan including as one of its first tasks the translation of IAIA FasTips No. 3 Climate Smart Decisions into Arabic.

In advancing climate change mitigation and best practices by impact assessment practitioners, including the use of traditional knowledge systems and local community experience, IAIA has

  • reviewed each of the existing Best Practice documents with respect to whether and how well it addressed climate change and found only one, Health Impact Assessment, was appropriate for and in need of improved reference to climate change.

In addressing IAIA own climate change behavior, IAIA has:

  • identified carbon footprint calculation software;
  • incorporated climate change and biodiversity into its values statement; and
  • developed a contributions policy that bar gifts from climate deniers and assess the ESG benchmarks of other potential donors.

IAIA was disappointed to learn that its application for Observer status at the Arctic Council was not accepted.

Lastly, your support helped significantly.  However, our progress has been slowed due to a lack of funding.  If you would please consider another gift the project, we only have only raised $250 of a $360k goal.  https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/wise-climate-change-action-using-impact-assessment/

Your partnership and support are vital to assisting IAIA meeting its mission.  Thank you again
