Project Report | Feb 5, 2021
Ist Quarter 2021

By David Bancroft | Executive Director

I want to thank you for your support of IAIA’s Wise Climate Change Action Using Impact Assessment, and provide a progress report on the impact of your gift.  Your generosity enabled IAIA to make advances in implementing its comprehensive Climate Change Action Plan.

To help protect the polar bears, IAIA developed and submitted an application to become an Observer to the Arctic Council (AC), and provide advice on cross-jurisdictional issues.  The AC is the leading intergovernmental forum promoting cooperation, coordination and interaction among the Arctic States, Arctic Indigenous peoples and other Arctic inhabitants on common Arctic issues, in particular on issues of sustainable development and environmental protection in the Arctic.  With the changing climate and loss of arctic habitat in that region, the way of life for both people and wildlife is endangered.

IAIA will not know until May 2021 if its Observer application has been approved.  As an Observer, our specific interest is to work directly with the Arctic Council’s Working Groups, such as the Sustainable Development Working Group (SDWG) and Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) Activities.  Of particular interest to us is one of the newer projects initiated by the SDWG, “Good Practices for Environmental Impact Assessment and Meaningful Engagement in the Arctic”.

In January 2021, IAIA moved forward another Climate Change sponsored the Society of Environmental Journalist entitled, “2021 Journalists’ Guide to Energy & Environment.”  IAIA interacted with Journalists across the nation, and some internationally, to raise the profile of the importance of impact assessment in addressing climate change issues.

In the coming months, IAIA will be advancing two more components of the Climate Change Action Plan:

  • Building relationships with the law community.
  • Harnessing the power of the financial sector

Lastly, your support helped significantly.  If you would please consider another gift the project, we only have only raised $250 of a $360k goal.  https://www.globalgiving.org/projects/wise-climate-change-action-using-impact-assessment/

Your partnership and support are vital to assisting IAIA meeting its mission.  Thank you again
