A new school "is born"

Lhuri school with village

It took a little longer than planned to complete the first phase of school construction at Shree Tripitak Basic School in Lhuri in Upper Dolpo. Lhuri, a village in the Upper Dolpo at an altitude of almost 4,000 meters, had no school for many years and only one very dilapidated building.

After the old building was demolished, the first construction phase with eight rooms has now been completed. This is initially enough to teach children in the nursery/kindergarten and grades 1-3. We also provide rooms for the children who live at the school, as well as for the teachers and a room for cooking.

The delay in completion is primarily due to the fact that we have not been able to transport the timber to Lhuri since September last year due to heavy snowfall. But at the beginning of September the roof was completely covered, and the building was plastered. Unfortunately, due to a more complex roof construction, we had not enough material to equip the floors of the rooms with wood. We have to complete this in 2024.

The locals in Lhuri, and especially the children and teachers, are overjoyed to have a roof over their heads, classes in separate rooms and a space for the kitchen.

Everything is not yet as it will be. Unfortunately, part of the compound wall in front of the school premises collapsed due to heavy rain. We will have to fix that in the coming year, too. Sanitary facilities and 3-4 more rooms are still missing. But the whole school complex should be finished by 2025/2026. So far we spent around 35,000 USD for the construction including transport of the material.

A first important milestone has been reached. Lessons have started with great enthusiasm in the new building. We are really looking forward to the next steps and many happy school children from Lhuri, Ke and Sungjer, the two neighboring villages. We wish Dawa Phuntsok and his team of teachers all the best.

We would be very pleased if you continue to support us with our work in the Upper Dolpo area. Thank you for your generosity and trust in our work.
