The dictionary defines gratitude as
gratitude [grat-i-tood, -tyood] noun
1.the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful:
Full Moon Farm and myself define gratitude as the best volunteers, the greatest supporters, the kindest neighbors and most dedicated firefighters in the world.
On this Thanksgiving Day, I am humbled by the outpouring of love and support for all of us during these trying times of forest fires in our backyard. Actually, the controlled burn was on one side of our little trail, and the dogs were on the other! However, we were protected by humans and Universal Law, and for that we are thankful.
The Party Rock Fire, as it is called, was very close to the Farm. While we have a Black Mountain, NC mailing address, we are in a tri-county area called Broad River Twp. You can throw a rock and hit Rutherford and Henderson counties while standing in Buncombe. We call Broad River HOME.
The fires are still burning and may for some time, but the imminent danger of raging wildfire has diminished greatly. We will be prudent and careful in our daily activities.
A crisis teaches us many things. I am so very proud to say that our volunteers and our veterinarian are not weak points, but strong and united for rescue and wolfdogs. We made it through because of volunteers that gave up vacation time, slept on the couch in shifts, brought us food and water, managed communications with the various fire fighting units. Our veterinarian and her staff, Animals R Us, Flat Rock, NC, made sure that our refugees were comfortable and cared for to the best of their abilities.
THANK YOU ALL!
Our weak points made apparent were the need for passable logging roads, which will require removing trees, stumps and grading the ground, around the perimeter of the property as well as to the pond. The pond needs dredged and cleaned out to provide a watering point. WE NEED A WELL, or two. Our circa 1940 gravity fed spring gives us great water, but not an abundance of it in a drought. A well or two will supply enough water that protection and defense of the structures is doable. We do not have enough crates. We were blessed to have BWAR (Brother Wolf Animal Rescue) step up with crates, AND a vehicle to help move the at risk animals to safety. The preferred plastic airline crates run more than $250.00 each, and we need 10 to 12 more! We were short of stainless steel buckets for crated animals. Last but not least, our 15 year old transport van has 262,500 miles on it, and needs replaced. I can no longer call it dependable in
