Conservation effort for the cockatoos of Masakambing (Cacatua sulphurea abbotti) is in a new stage! Although the local peoples are now consistently looking after the population, the quality of their habitat must also improve to meet the carrying capacity of the ever-increasing cockatoo population in Masakambing Island. Our campaign raised awareness about the existence of these rare cockatoos, which made them one of the most favorite birds not only among the villagers but also at the district level.

The enthusiasm of the Maskambing community and the regional government of Sumenep is reflected in their persistent lobbying for the cockatoos as tourism assets by promoting them through social media and taking part in the National Tourism Competition. The community was awarded in the top 300 tourist village destination in Indonesia in 2023, and in the top 10 best tourist village in East Java Province. This persistence is also reflected in the disbursement of village funds, as they recently created a cockatoo monument in Masakambing.

The district's pride is also shown by several cockatoo monuments in Sumenep City, both in Taman Bunga (Flowers Park) and Tajamara Park. Furthermore, during the anniversary of Sumenep City, Masalembu District used a cockatoo mascot on the stand and displayed information on a screen during the exhibition. Likewise, the Sumenep regional government also displayed photos of cockatoos in several of their offices such as the Tourism Service and the Sumenep Environmental Service. This shows the extraordinary attention to the existence of the cockatoos in Masakambing, which was initiated by our project. This creates a strong foundation so that the existence of these birds can remain sustainable in Maskambing Island.
