At the end of another camp season, we at Camp Forest reflect on the year behind us and take a deep breath before the new year begins. The 2019 season was full of fun, challenge, and beauty. Read on for some of our greatest achievments below.
We completed our first ever through-hike on the Hills to Sea trail in 2019! Due to the generosity of private landowners and our staff's tireless efforts to bring campers gear and water, Camp Forest participants 'slack-packed' the gorgeous trail (almost all the way) from Unity to Belfast. Unlike other through trails, the Hills to Sea cuts through private land all the way to the coast, so it offers us a great opportunity to teach the principles of Leave No Trace and to experience the pay off for respectful collaboration, in addition to the usual fire and wilderness skills.
One of our most loyal and long-term campers passed his Junior Maine Guide testing week this year, in part due to the skills he learned at Camp Forest. We re so proud of our most recent graduate!
We finished off the year with our annual Harvest Dinner, which we extended this year to our past campers and our volunteers. We expressed gratitude together for the season's bounty and the relationships we cultivated along the way.
Thank you for all you've done to provide scholarships to this year's campers. We hope you'll think of us as you head into your year-end giving so we can continue to offer camperships to our low-income, rural Maine campers. They, too, yearn for fun, rewarding outdoor experiences.
