In the middle of a scorching day, Fikrie welcomes us into her small home where we meet Resul, her eight year old son who has been paralyzed since birth, and her twelve year old daughter Elhame. Reading and laughing together, Elhame and her cousin who’s visiting, brighten up the room while bedridden Resul rocks in his cradle and Fikrie prepares his lunch.
After several years of sickness, Fikrie’s husband, Sedat, died around three months ago due to fatal complications with his heart, leaving Fikrie a widow of five children. The three oldest boys are out picking through rubbish in order to support their family and we were unable to meet them.
Fikrie is most grateful to the donors and The Ideas Partnership for supporting her son Resul. Not only does the Widows Fund contribute to the medical supplies needed for his condition, but on Saturdays, Resul and his mother go to The Ideas Partnership centre in Fushe Kosove where they and other families with disabled children have physiotherapy sessions with a professional physiotherapist.
However, donors like you also ensure that Elhame will continue her education, the best hope for a good future.
Elhame missed almost a month of school after her father died, but Hysni, our school mediator, worked with the Ministry of Education and the school to get her reinstated. Thrilled about finishing the 5th grade, Elhame told us that she was most excited to be back in her English class, since that is her favourite subject.
Your donations help struggling widows like Fikrie, providing food for the table, medical supplies for the disabled, and school material for students who otherwise wouldn’t be educated. Thank you for your donation and increasing the quality of life for the families in need.
