This project will build & enhance education & economic skills among children & widows in rural Kenya which will enable them to generate a sustainable income to provide for their basic needs. The WIDOWS CAN project will empower widows to come together & support each other by engaging in small but profitable projects that will help in eradicating poverty among widows & their children. This project will also be used as an avenue of championing widow's & children's right.
Kenya is ranked 33rd worldwide among the countries where widows live a devastated lifestyle with approximately 8 million widows. Many of these widows are subjected to extreme poverty, starvation, rape, HIV/AIDS, seizure of their homes/possessions, social exclusion and their children's inability to access education (report by The Loomba Foundation-2015). This project intends to impact the lives of 2000 widows in an effort to reach as many vulnerable and impoverished widows and their children.
The WIDOWS CAN Project will increase the capacity and opportunities of widows and their households to attain greater access and control over resources as well as a sustainable income by -Training widows on beadwork, basketry and woodwork to start small profitable projects -Starting up small poultry projects for widows -Educating a vulnerable widow's children through high school or vocational training -Women's and Children's rights training to enhance awareness
The WIDOWS CAN project will allow widows and their children to rise out of poverty and generate a sustainable income. It will enable at least 2000 widows to be in a position to provide for their households as well as educate some of their children and enhance their livelihoods. It will enable at least 500 poor widows children get access to proper education with a promise of a better future.
