Wetland Restoration for 500 Farmers in Kano

By Francis Osisiogu | Project Leader

The Wetland Restoration for 500 Farmers in Kano project is currently in its early funding stage, with a total goal of $12,300 and the full amount still remaining. At this time, no donations or monthly contributions have been recorded, indicating that financial mobilization is still in progress and remains the most urgent priority for project activation. Efforts are being directed toward increasing visibility, engaging potential donors, and securing initial funding commitments that will enable implementation to begin.

Despite the funding gap, groundwork planning has been clearly defined. The project is designed to restore 100 hectares of degraded wetlands, directly supporting 500 smallholder farmers whose livelihoods have been impacted by declining soil fertility, poor water retention, and ecosystem loss. Preparatory steps such as outlining restoration strategies, identifying key intervention areas, and structuring farmer training programs in sustainable agriculture have been completed, ensuring readiness once funds are secured.

The intervention approach combines ecological restoration with practical agricultural support, including invasive species removal, replanting native vegetation, and improving water management systems. In parallel, farmers will receive training in organic and climate-resilient farming practices, alongside the establishment of local stewardship groups to maintain long-term sustainability.

While implementation has not yet commenced due to the funding shortfall, the project remains positioned for immediate rollout upon receipt of initial donations. Securing financial support will directly unlock activities that are expected to improve crop yields, strengthen farmer incomes, restore biodiversity, and enhance climate resilience across Kano communities. Continued focus is therefore being placed on fundraising as the critical next step toward delivering these environmental and economic benefits.
