"She Can't do Anything"... Or, Can She?

By Marlies | Volunteer

Yes, Dee can!
Yes, Dee can!

Our collaboration with the student interns from Bentara Campus has come to an end for this semester. We at Bina Berdaya Bangsa are grateful for their dedication and valuable contributions in the development of our home visit program for families with children with disabilities.  Together, we expanded the support we can offer to families by creating individualised development plans.  These plans consist of practical and achievable steps that children and their families can take to improve their daily life.

In the last update, we highlighted Dee’s journey towards becoming more independent with the hope that her father can eventually return to work and improve the family's financial situation. While Dee is not yet fully independent, progress is evident. In addition to continuing her toilet training regimen, we with the Bentara interns developed a new independence plan focused on Dee learning how to dress herself. During each home visit, we brought a set of clothes and practiced together. Dee quickly recognized the routine. As soon as we arrived, she would point to the bag of clothes, knowing exactly why we had come.

Despite limited mobility in one of her arms, Dee persevered. At first, putting on a shirt was difficult, but with practice she became more capable and confident. Next, she started learning how to put on pants by herself. Dee's grandmother would sit beside us watching with surprise and amazement. She often wondered why we kept coming back and why we were investing so much effort in teaching Dee these skills.

"She can't do anything anyway," she would sometimes say.

Yet, we continued to encourage the family: keep practicing every day and keep believing that change is possible. Through these home visits, families realize that their child with disabilities possess potential to grow in their capabilities and talents.

We look forward to welcoming a new group of student interns in the coming semester and the opportunity to offer them practical experience in empowering families. You too are invited to join the work!  Whether you would like to financially support or just stay tuned to these updates, thank you for journeying with us in maximizing the potential for children with disabilities and their families to thrive.
