This project will contribute to youth of a marginalized and disadvantaged rural community to attain sustainable artisanal livelihood skills necessary to reverse the poor quality of life their community endures, due to livelihood crisis adduced to effects of climate change and marginalization in provision of public services. It will equip 25 youth with life skills and knowledge to become welders who earn incomes they can use to meet the basic and genuine needs of their respective households.
Like the rest of Uganda, Lango's 2.5 million people are overly dependent on smallholder agriculture for their livelihoods. Incomes from rain-fed agriculture are increasingly low, due to the negative impacts of climate change. According to a government household survey, annual incomes of 96.5% of Lango households are less than US$ 2.652. Average size of a Lango household is 6; meaning they survive on less than US$ 1.2 per day; below the poverty line. Indeed, 44% of Lango households are food poor.
Youth now make up 75% of Uganda's population. We have the 2nd youngest population in the world. So, youth carry burden of livelihood responsibilities for many households in Uganda. The reason we intend to provide youths with a non-agricultural livelihood option - welding. We will buy machines, equipment and materials for an Innovator, a young adult who exceptionally completed a welding apprenticeship with an established welder, to work with and mentor 25 youth to become income earning welders.
Standards of living will improve for households of at least 80 percent of youth who will apprentice with this project. At least 50 percent of benefiting households of the participating youth will earn sufficient incomes from doing welding work to be able to meet their basic & genuine needs, including feeding on balanced diets. And 90 percent of the benefiting youth will testify attaining improved social standing in their wider community, including being voted into & entrusted with leadership.
