We Love Reading (WLR) is an award-winning program seeking to create a generation of change makers by fostering a love for reading among children aged 2-10 throughout Jordan and the world. We train volunteers-who we call Reading Ambassadors-to run libraries and read aloud to children in their community, leveraging in-depth research we conduct with elite international institutions to inform our methodology. WLR operates in 60 countries and aims to reach all children around the world end of 2022.
Despite the enormous progress humanity has achieved in overcoming illiteracy during the last century, the love of reading with all of its potential gifts remains strikingly underdeveloped. Throughout most of both the industrialized and developing world, the pastime of reading is marginal in popular culture and shows few signs of expanding. Reading for pleasure becomes an alien concept beginning in childhood.
We Love Reading is an innovative model that provides a practical, cost efficient, sustainable, grassroots approach to create changemakers through reading. WLR supports the activism of local volunteers to increase reading levels among children by focusing on the readaloud experience to instill the love of reading. The program constitutes training local volunteer women, men and youth to hold readaloud sessions in public spaces in their neighborhoods where books are routinely read aloud to children.
WLR is achieving impact at scale because it is a simple effective product that appeals to its market and depends on networks of youth and women and men who already resemble a movement to bring about social change through reading. WLR aims to develop long term cultural change. WLR isn't delivering services which need support systems, it's creating capabilities in hundreds of local youth, women and men enabling them to be creative for themselves.
