Torrential rainfall and devastation came to the northeastern region of Peru in March. As the local Piura River inundated the surrounding communities, the flood water levels rose to nearly 6 feet. IDESI, a high impact microfinance organization, watched their community as they were impacted by the floods. Members lost their homes, crops, and most of their possessions but were determined to rebuild and start over. Please consider giving as we help IDESI in their rebuilding effort.
In March, the coastal El Nino effects brought torrential rainfall and devastation to many of the communities and borrowers IDESI serves. As the local Piura River inundated the surrounding communities, the flood water levels rose to nearly 6 feet. We met with many IDESI borrowers impacted by the floods who had lost their homes, crops, and most of their possessions but were determined to rebuild and start over. Some had been temporarily displaced and forced to live in tents and makeshift housing.
In an act of great compassion, IDESI not only offered their clients loan restructuring programs but donated food, mattresses, and other assistance to help in rebuilding their community. WCCN was inspired by the resolve and grit of the borrowers, and humbled by the empathetic actions of IDESI. Rebuilding efforts have been underway and progress has been made in connecting communities despite the heavy infrastructure damage. With community efforts underway to repair households and towns at-large, WCCN's support of IDESI will ensure that there is a continued effort in developing the local economy and empowering entrepreneurs as they rebuild their businesses and create long-term plans to survive and thrive in the face of a changing climate.
