Training on Solid and Liquid organic compost

By Madjalia Seynou | Project leader

Thank you so much for supporting FarmSahel!

Because of your continuous support, this year, FarmSahel supported 310 women farmers from 9 villages of Bindé, a rural commune of Burkina Faso with training on the production of liquid and solid compost and on the technical itineraries of cowpea planting. All 310 women received organic cowpea seeds and are now ready for the 2022 planting season.

Through our new program of Food Growth through Regenerative Cultivation, FarmSahel embarked on this training initiative. FarmSahel focused on educating farmers on creating, using, and storing solid and liquid compost. Compost is necessary in the Sahel because the soil that rural African farmers depend on is deprived of nutrients and organic matter. When trying to plant in this soil, yields are oftentimes insufficient, with a high potential for plant disease. In an attempt to replenish nutrients, farmers would apply harsh fertilizers and pesticides. While this worked at first, over time, it quickly became unsustainable. Additionally, pesticides are expensive and contribute to soil deprivation. FarmSahel learned of the harsh side effects of fertilizer and devised a way to educate farmers on the importance of compost.

FarmSahel also distributed organic cowpea seeds to all the women who received the training and will continue with field visits once they start planting and with training on post-harvest management (crop conservation).

We hope you enjoy seeing the impact your donation is making! Our training on compost and other sustainable and healthy farming techniques will continue with support from donations! With each donation, small or large, we can expand our training programs, provide women with better tools, and create an overall increase in quality of life for the rural women farmers of Burkina Faso.

Our recurring donors are making a continuous impact and we are truly grateful for the ongoing support. If you are not yet a recurring donor, we warmly invite you to consider setting up a recurring donation.

Please also share this with your contacts and invite them to consider supporting this ongoing project.
