Enhance Access to Water for 750 families in India

We feel happy to be able to communicate with you yet again..............there are two brief yet exciting updates from the project sites.

(1) After 5 successful projects for enhancing access to water for tribals in western India - cleaning & deepening of 3 wells, cleaning of a pond and connection of the drinking water of a tribal residential hostel with village well, we are now on our 6th project at Village Belpali, Block Trimbakeshwar, District Nasik, Maharashtra State, India.

The two attached photographs 1 & 2, show construction of drinking water tank in progress and measurements underway for laying down of pipeline, the drinking water tank will be connected to the village well - resolving the drinking water crisis at village Belpali.

(2) In the last report we shared how clean rain water from the recent monsoon had filled up a pond in Village Kharset, which had been cleaned after 25 years. The photograph showed children enjoying a swim in it too. To add to this, we recently came to know that villagers have planted some fish seeds in the pond too. It is strongly expected that by Jan 2013 there would be well developed fish farming, serving as an income generation option for the villagers along with providing opportunities of improving daily meal intake (Photo 3)

Our last report on July 9th closed saying that we will be sharing with you photographs from the field - of how rain has filled up recently cleaned ponds and wells. So here they are:

Photo 1: On May 8th, the report posted discussed how a village pond (at Kharset, Block Trimbakeshwar, Dist Nasik, Maharashtra, India) was cleaned after 25 years - an activity in which 8-9 feet of algae and slush was removed. The photograph shows the pond after it has been filled by the recent rains and children are enjoying a swim in it.

Photo 2 & 3: The report on July 9th detailed as to how wells in two villages of Vadipada and Kharset were deepened by 7ft each. They were also widened. The attached photos show how they have almost been filled uptil the brim by the recent rains.

Photo 4 & 5: Photos 4 and 5 are of a check dam which was the organization's (SNS Foundation) pilot activity in the Block of Trimbakeshwar, District Nashik, Maharashtra State, India. This check dam was constructed at Village Jhambulpada in April 2011, prior to initiation of monsoon. For two successive years, the dam has been filled with rain water with overflows flowing into the neighbouring state of Gujarat.

We are currently working in Village Belpali. The project underway is connection of the village well to a drinking water tank which is being currently constructed. With the help of an electric pump, water from the well will be pumped into the tank for villagers to use. The next report will describe this activity.
