Progress report

By Imani Mathias | General Manager

SHIPO continues to monitor the condition of learning environments across its operational areas, and through this assessment it has identified twenty schools with the most urgent infrastructure needs. These schools face serious shortages in key facilities, particularly in reliable water supply systems, adequate sanitation in the form of latrines, and proper dining halls equipped with functional kitchens. Such gaps negatively affect both the health and academic performance of pupils, and addressing them is essential for creating safer, cleaner, and more supportive school environments.

The project aims to benefit a significant number of learners and staff. In total, the identified schools accommodate 9,812 girls and 6,894 boys, as well as 160 teachers who also rely on these facilities for a conducive working environment. In addition, 480 orphans and vulnerable children stand to gain directly from the improvements, as access to clean water, proper sanitation, and safe eating spaces has profound effects on their wellbeing, dignity, and ability to focus on their studies.

As part of its planning, SHIPO has incorporated climate change considerations into the proposed interventions. Recognizing the increasing strain on water resources due to climate variability, the project includes measures for water recharge and sustainable water management. These measures are intended to ensure long-term water availability, reduce environmental stress, and make the school infrastructure more resilient to changing weather patterns.

At present, the project remains in the fundraising stage. SHIPO is actively reaching out to donors, partners, corporate institutions, and community stakeholders to mobilize the resources required to begin implementation. Once funding is secured, the organization will embark on constructing water systems, building latrines, developing dining halls and kitchens, and integrating climate-resilient technologies to ensure sustainability of the investments. SHIPO remains committed to maintaining transparency, accountability, and community participation throughout the process.

Overall, the School Infrastructure Support Project is a critical intervention that promises to improve learning conditions and health outcomes for more than seventeen thousand pupils, teachers, and vulnerable children. SHIPO will continue its fundraising and engagement efforts until the full financial requirements are met, after which implementation will commence to address the identified needs.
