Summary Report: School Facilities Improvement Initiative
SHIPO has identified 20 schools in critical need of basic infrastructure to support a safe and conducive learning environment. These schools lack essential facilities such as water supply systems, latrines, and dining halls with kitchens, which are vital for ensuring pupils’ health, nutrition, and academic performance.
The initiative targets a total of 17,186 pupils—9,812 girls and 6,894 boys—alongside 160 teachers and 480 orphans. These groups stand to benefit significantly from improved school infrastructure, which will contribute to better hygiene, reduced absenteeism, and enhanced learning outcomes.
In addition to infrastructure gaps, the region faces water scarcity due to prolonged droughts linked to climate change. This has affected both schools and surrounding communities, making water recharge systems a necessary component of the proposed solution.
Challenges
The most pressing challenge is the lack of adequate facilities in schools, which hinders children’s access to quality education, proper nutrition, and basic health services. Many pupils are denied their rights to a safe and supportive learning environment. The broader community also suffers from limited access to clean water, exacerbating the situation.
This reality undermines efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4): “Ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.”
Proposed Solutions
To address these challenges, SHIPO proposes a multi-faceted approach:
These interventions aim to create a safe, inclusive, and effective learning environment that supports both academic achievement and overall well-being.
Current Status
As of now, no implementation activities have begun. While the project has been well designed and the needs clearly identified, fundraising efforts are still ongoing and have not yet reached the level required to initiate construction or procurement.
SHIPO remains committed to transparency and accountability. Stakeholders will be kept informed as progress is made toward mobilizing resources and launching the implementation phase.
