Help families in the Cangrejal River Valley of Honduras to gain access to clean drinking water. Your support will help local communities to develop a sustainable, community-run water system bringing water to their homes for cleaning, bathing and drinking.
More than half of the population in Honduras don't have access to clean drinking water. El Pital is a community in Northern Honduras where the existing water source is polluted and has been slowly drying up due to climate changes and agricultural practices. Due to water scarcity, for half of the year, the few connected to the system receive only 6-8 hours of water per week, and those without water have to haul and store water from neighbors or streams resulting in increased illness.
The community members have identified a new water source and designed an improved water system with the capacity to serve all the houses with clean and abundant water. Since 2012 the community has worked to protect the surrounding land, raise funds and obtain necessary land permissions. The project construction began in 2024 and the first three phases have already been complete. The final three phases includes the river crossing, the holding tank and connection to the community houses.
The project will significantly improve health for residents in the entire sector by providing drinkable water, local employment, environmental restoration, and education. Long-term the disease and sanitation risks will be reduced for low resourced rural families in Honduras. A locally run water board will protect and conserve the water source, monitor water quality, and provide training on system maintenance, making it a permanent and sustainable solution for clean water.
