After assessing the community’s water needs, a project is underway to provide clean water to the villagers. Following a short questionnaire which was completed by the villagers, and provided us with the needed information such as population, current water sources, possible future water sources,it also questioned locally available labour and materials as this water system will be constructed by the villagers themselves.
Included in the water sources identified by the village were two spring sources. These were both investigated. One source had a very low flow and was therefore ruled out. The second spring had a flow of 0.54l/s. This is adequate for the village. Multiple villagers indicated that the spring had a constant flow all year round.
The next step was to conduct the topographic survey. Starting at the spring source the proposed pipe route was surveyed. This was done using an Abney hand level and a surveyor’s tape.
A preliminary design was then created. The major components of the system are:
The preliminary design will be presented to the villagers. The design will then be modified according to their feedback.
