One of the latest beneficiaries that we just concluded is Murichu Primary School .Murichu Primary School WASH project was identified, together with other five needy schools in the area during a situational analysis carried out by KRA in collaboration with the partnering local communities. Part of those needy schools is Ritaya Primary, not very far from Murichu Primary, and it is the next to benefit from your selflessness and your kind contributions!
The overall objective is to improve water supply, sanitation & hygiene, food security & nutrition and environment conservation in selected rural schools in Kenya. The specific objectives are to
ü Increase sustainable water availability for drinking and agricultural use (see Box 2) through construction of rainwater harvesting systems (water storage tanks (75m3) and farm ponds (75m3) both supplied by the expansive school roof catchments;
ü Improve sanitation and good hygiene practices in schools through construction of gender-sensitive ventilated improved Pit (VIP) latrines– separate blocks for boys and girls, and hand-washing facility;
ü Increase vegetable production and nutrition for school meals program through irrigated vegetable gardens;
ü Improve environmental conservation and climate change mitigation through establishment of tree seedling nurseries and tree planting (one tree per pupil per year); and
ü Build the capacity and increase knowledge of local communities on rainwater harvesting, improved sanitation, health & hygiene (WASH), food security & nutrition (climate-smart agriculture) and environmental conservation.
Project Implementation
The project will be implemented by KRA in collaboration with the School Management Committees (SMC) of the selected Primary Schools. KRA will provide all the technical support and backstopping needed in collaboration the SMC during project implementation. KRA has qualified Technical Assistants, who will be in charge of monitoring and supervision of construction work to ensure quality control and adherence to engineering design. Procurement of material will be jointly done by SMC and KRA field-based Technical Assistants. KRA Nairobi-based team will also undertake regular field monitoring visits to offer technical backstopping and support.
Conclusion
Children are the most important resource in a society and their well-being especially while in school affects their day to day life in terms of good performance and emotional growth. Creating a conducive learning environment is therefore an essential factor to consider in achieving this goal. For this reason, KRA has made it a priority to provide access to clean and safe water and proper sanitation facilities in primary schools, which in most rural settings still remains a huge challenge and a contributing factor to school drop outs and poor performance. The intervention views children as agents of change in the promotion and adoption of best practices in the community and society at large
