Greetings from Kenya Rainwater Association! This is yet another report from Murichu Primary School to catch us up on the ongoing activities since my last update.
One of the output of the WASH project in this school was constructing a masonry water tank of 75m3 volume and installation of guttering systems including a foul-flash system, I am happy to report that so far the construction of the tank is complete together with the watering point.
Water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) in Schools affects:
Key goals of WASH in Schools include increased female school attendance, more kids washing their hands and fewer schoolchildren with worms and diarrhea
Access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation facilities coupled with adaptation of hygienic practices ensures improved health of the people and protect them, particularly the children, from a number of water and sanitation related diseases including the most commonly occurring disease - diarrhea.
Lack of safe water and sanitation facilities turn schools into unsafe places where diseases are transmitted with mutually reinforcing negative impacts on the children, their families, communities and overall development.
The pupils and the entire community says THANK YOU for becoming a part of the change they have awaited for so long. With the October rains the tank will collect water and this will see the end of pupils carrying water from home or collecting water from dirty rivers and spending so much time out there instead of concentrating on their studies. With this we expect pupils’ retention in school to go up and their overall performance to improve.
The next phase is to construct gender sensitive latrines for boys, girls and teachers and as always we depend on your generous contribution and your goodwill.
