The project will provide a water ambulance to provide a round the clock emergency services to pregnant women, neonates, children in serious ill health and other emergency condition.The project will serve a population of 7,500 on three islands communities of Lake Kariba in Zambia.These communities have no health facility and the nearest facility located 86 kilometres away.The ambulance will operate on a 24 hours service to transport any emergency health condition and will serve lives of people.
There are currently 7,500 people living on three islands on Lake Kariba in Siavonga District of Zambia according to the Central Statistic Office, Census 2010.These communities do not have health facilities and the population is at risk of losing their lives due to avoidable health conditions which could be saved by a qualified medical professional at a health facility.Pregnant women and neonates are the worst affected when it comes to seeking emergency health services from the island.
The project will provide a emergency water ambulance service to evacuate pregnant and neonates requiring the services of a professional health practitioner in emergency conditions.The project will provide a first aid equipment and materials and a qualified evacuation nurse to ensure the safety of the client.The project will facilitate a monthly outreach clinic to the island communities with important health education and clinical checkups.
The project will help bring to the attention of Authorities the plight of these communities and the need to put up a health facility and investment in the water transport so that these communities can have more services such as school, health post and social programs.The project will have a positive impact on health seeking behaviour and going forward the community will be seeking health services at whatever cost because they would have understood that the importance of health.
