EarthCare Designs has designed Waste Care composter units that turn biodegradable waste into compost in just two months! We aim to provide 500 families in Nashik (our city) with these composter units, to transform Nashik into a zero-waste city ! Home composting and citizen's involvement can reduce ten to fifteen tons of waste generated by the city on a daily basis, besides adding nearly $50 to the family's income.
Nashik, India generates 350 tons of solid waste daily going into landfills. For this fast-growing city with a population growth rate of 64%, the projected quantity of solid waste in 2015 will be 750 tons daily - a huge amount needing urgent solutions. As per municipal body's estimates, nearly 40% of the waste is compostable, but only 2-3% is actually composted. About 600 million rupees is spent annually on waste management, which can be used for other social purposes.
We design and provide Waste Care composters, home-visits and training to families to become effective waste-care managers, also enabled to transform their home waste into quality compost. We monitor the progress by regular contacts, community meetings and systematic documentation.
The project aims to reach 500 families of lower socio-economic status in the first year, and nearly 10,000 families in 5 years. The project will reduce the amount of daily waste going into landfills by 10 to 15 %, thus lessening pollution. Though the coverage is small in the beginning, it has potential to demonstrate that home composting is a viable option. The impact is generation of quality compost, its ability to bring return on investment for families and showcasing a zero-waste model.
