We continued to work together with the communities of Dawasamu/Bureiwai District towards long-term sustainable goals and achievements in waste management. Through baseline research, educational workshops, community empowerment, construction of recycling points, regular monitoring and data collection.
In 2020 a total of 2.277 tons of waste has been recycled: 1331 kg tin, 650 kg glass, 258 kg hard plastic and 38 kg aluminium. Accumulating total since 2016 is 17 tons of recyclable material that has been prevented from being burnt, buried or dumped in Dawasamu/Bureiwai District. Now the COVID restrictions have been lifted we are able to do a waste collection which is scheduled for the end of September 2021. Members of the community have completed waste collection forms and the information is very positive with communities continuing to recycle. We will update you next report on how much we collected!
It is vital that communities take ownership and by working closely with key members of the communities and encouraging them to use the information collected to celebrate successes, make improvements and change behaviour to create a culture where waste management is understood.
We thank you for your contributions and continued support!
