Over the course of the summer, VHP and our on-the-ground partners have made some great progress on the WASH and Maternal Healthcare Initiative. We are excited to report that Afro Ethiopia Integrated Development began implementing the BMZ WASH and Maternal Healthcare Initiative in the Spring of 2018. Since implementation, AEID and VHP have accomplished the following:
The rainy season presented some challenges for the project but as soon as the rains end, the rest of the construction projects will be initiated. In the meantime, Zonal leadership pledges their support for the projects and the Zonal Health Department has agreed to work closely with VHP and AEID to:
Overall, VHP’s WASH and Maternal Healthcare Initiative is progressing in the BMZ and we look forward to the continued success of project implementation in the coming months.
We appreciate your on-going support of these critical projects, positively impacting maternal health in rural Ethiopia.
As the rainy season wraps up across much of Ethiopia, our on-the-ground partner, Afro-Ethiopia Integrated Development (AEID) - has launched the WASH and Maternal Health Initiative and is revisiting each site to determine next steps for project implementation. While on site, AEID is meeting with stakeholders including community leaders, the heads of the zonal finance, health, and water offices, while also reporting to VHP and engaging our support, as needed. AEID has two designated project managers to help coordinate each step of project implementation in the Bench Maji Zone and we are grateful for their continued dedication.
Currently, materials are en route to each health facility for Maternity Waiting Areas (MWA), water pump repair/digging, and other WASH infrastructure. In order to begin construction on MWAs, showers, latrines, or other WASH infrastructure, AEID will focus on sustaining water sources by installing AfriDev pumps at the health centers. Engineers will also continue to troubleshoot the use of an already-existing well at Bachuma Hospital.
We are looking forward to receiving more progress reports from our partners in the Bench Maji Zone and will update you with more progress in a few months.
